Shopify vape ban: what UK vape retailers need to know

In summer 2026 Shopify removed vape products from its platform. Here's what happened, whether it affects you, and how to move without losing your rankings.

What happened

On 24 June 2026, Shopify began emailing merchants who sell e-cigarettes and vaping products. The message was simple: remove those products by 7 to 8 July, or face suspension.

The move followed pressure from US state attorneys general over illegal vape sales. Rather than check products one by one, Shopify banned the whole category, including products that are legal and properly authorised.

What the ban covers

  • Devices and kitsPod kits, mods and starter kits.
  • E-liquidsIncluding nicotine-free liquids and shortfills.
  • Pods and refillsPrefilled pods, cartridges and refills.
  • Coils and accessoriesReplacement coils, parts and vaping accessories.

Does it apply in the UK?

Early coverage described the ban as US-only. Since then, UK retailers have reported receiving the same removal notices. It's a Shopify policy rather than a change in UK law: selling vapes online to adults is still legal here.

Shopify Payments never supported vape products, so most stores were already relying on third-party gateways. If you still sell vape products on Shopify, treat your store as at risk and plan your move now.

What to do now

  1. Export your data

Download products, customers, orders and a list of every URL before your access is restricted.

  2. Benchmark your rankings

Record your current traffic and positions so you can measure recovery after the move.

  3. Choose your platform

WooCommerce for most stores, Magento for large or complex catalogues.

  4. Migrate with redirects

Map every old URL to its new page with 301 redirects to keep your rankings.

Why a rushed move costs rankings

Changing platform changes your URLs. Without redirects, Google treats your old pages as gone and your new ones as brand new. The rankings you built over years can disappear in weeks.

A careful migration carries over the signals that make you rank: URLs, titles, descriptions, structured data and internal links. Most stores see a short, small dip and then recover.

Questions

Is selling vapes online still legal in the UK?

Yes. The ban is Shopify's own policy, not a change in UK law. You can still sell vaping products online to adults.

Can I keep my domain name?

Yes. Your domain belongs to you. We point it at your new store, so customers and search engines find you at the same address.

Can I keep selling non-vape products on Shopify?

The ban targets vape and e-cigarette products. Other products aren't covered, but most specialist vape retailers will find it simpler to move the whole store.

Why not move to another hosted platform?

Hosted platforms set their own rules and can change them. With self-hosted WooCommerce or Magento, you choose your hosting and payment provider, so one company's policy change can't close your store.
